    Arts Advocacy 2016

I had a wonderful opportunity to recieve an award at the State Capitol a couple of months ago for Student Arts Advocacy. As a representative for Florida Atlantic University, myself and fellow FAU grad, Brianna Handy, were flown to Tallahasee, where we met with members of the House and Senate on issues concerning funding for the Arts in our state. It was Children's Week at the Capitol and the lobby was decorated beautifully by lots of little hands! Myself and Brianna Handy met

a journey of plastic surgery and paint

Hi friends! I recently resolved an oil painting titled Rhinoplasty. Here's the journey behind the work: I was initially inspired by a quick still life I completed over the summer: Guess what? I loved pattern! Who knew? So I devulged my pattern sensibilities by creating a painting centered around two points: my fascination in replicating pattern with paint and the relationship between myself and a garden bunny that was in disrepair in my backyard. When I first met the bunny

    Art + Constitution Day

I believe that art has a unique role in our world to create meaningful dialogue. By engaging in seeing and learning about art we are reminded that as humans we share more commonalities than we do differences. I felt it appropriate, therefore, on the week in which Americans will celebrate their citizenship and the adoption of the United States' most important document, to share a body of work by my colleague, friend and fellow Graduate Student at Florida Atlantic University,

    Neon Skin

A month overdue for a post! I've been sketching and painting some small still lifes that will blossom into a few new paintings soon. Here are some of the photo references of a new projection painting. Thanks for modeling, MC! and here's an outtake that MC took of me - not bad! #ashleycassens #ashleynicole #photography #photographer #neonlights #projection #artist #tampa #southflorida #floridaatlanticuniversity

    Video Installation

Hey friends and art lovers! I rounded out my first year of grad school by creating this video installation. Here are some still shots of the installation and a raw little video that documented the project. Here's a lot of garbledy gook about this work in case you want to understand it on a deeper level. It's a crude video, it may be a crude installation - but I was compelled to get.it.out despite my lack of knowledge about technical or sculptural things. Veil is an explorati

2014-15 College Advisory Board Graduate Student Grant

I am SO pleased to have been awarded the College Advisory Board Graduate Student Grant by the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters College! In between holidays and the semester wrapping up, I failed to share this wonderful news. The grant was awarded to support a move from traditional, well-crafted oil glaze paintings to incorporating a photo-based process, cyanotype, into my painting practice. Having honed my foundational skills in representational oil painting usi

    Provost Fellowship Winner 2014

I was extremely honored and humbled to be presented the Provost Fellowship Award at Florida Atlantic University this year! The Office of the Provost provides leadership to achieve excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, and service. This award of $2,500 is given each year to one individual in the Visual Arts and Art History Department for the 2014-15 Academic Year. How blessed am I? Here I am at the ceremony, matching my lipstick to the wall color: Fellow Grad Student

    I'm moving!

Yup, you read right: I'm moving! I was accepted into the Master of Fine Arts program at Florida Atlantic University this Fall and am packing my bags for Boca Raton, FL! In addition to my acceptance, I've been awarded a Graduate Tuition Assistantship and a monthly stipend. Not done yet! I was also awarded a one time scholarship for my first year in graduate school. I'll be splitting my time between Tampa and Boca Raton for my first year (the program is 3 years) but will prim
