Hi friends! I recently resolved an oil painting titled Rhinoplasty. Here's the journey behind the work: I was initially inspired by a quick still life I completed over the summer: Guess what? I loved pattern! Who knew? So I devulged my pattern sensibilities by creating a painting centered around two points: my fascination in replicating pattern with paint and the relationship between myself and a garden bunny that was in disrepair in my backyard. When I first met the bunny
The Norton Museum of Art is currently exhibiting Summer of ‘68: Photographing the Black Panthers. The exhibit features 22 photographs recently acquired by the museum which were shot by husband and wife duo, Pirkle Jones and Ruth-Marion Baruch. The photographs document the lives and activities of the people of Black Panthers Movement in Oakland, CA during the tumultuous summer of 1968. The collection of work casts an empathetic light on a side of the Party, who were tradi

Hi friends! This is my first official post as a married woman. Does my type look different?! Through the upcoming month the website and the Ashley Nicole Artistry will be undergoing some changes as it becomes Ashley Cassens dot com. During our honeymoon through Savanna, GA ,North Georgia and North Carolina I was creatively rejuvinated. I allowed myself to visually explore instead of self-censoring myself at every turn (which is what I found myself doing a lot of in my first
Hey friends and art lovers! I rounded out my first year of grad school by creating this video installation. Here are some still shots of the installation and a raw little video that documented the project. Here's a lot of garbledy gook about this work in case you want to understand it on a deeper level. It's a crude video, it may be a crude installation - but I was compelled to get.it.out despite my lack of knowledge about technical or sculptural things. Veil is an explorati

I am SO pleased to have been awarded the College Advisory Board Graduate Student Grant by the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters College! In between holidays and the semester wrapping up, I failed to share this wonderful news. The grant was awarded to support a move from traditional, well-crafted oil glaze paintings to incorporating a photo-based process, cyanotype, into my painting practice. Having honed my foundational skills in representational oil painting usi
"My paintings take up room, they make a stand. People will always react to that. Some people get inspired, others get offended. But, that's good. I like that." - Julian Schnabel Last week I was extremely honored to have been nominated and awarded a scholarship to attend the Masters Painting Workshop with Julian Schnabel at the Museum of Fort Lauderdale. (Thanks FAU Professors, for believing in me!) Let me preface my experience by saying this, I did my fair share of research

It's been a few weeks since I've filled you all in on my creative adventures, so here's an update! I'm putting the finishing touches on this watercolor piece that I've amusingly titled "Raquel Welch". It's 9 x 12 painting on Arches watercolor block. I know there are many artists that use watercolor paper that isn't on a block but I just CAN'T go there. Perhaps I haven't experienced enough with different brands but the Arches blocks are where it's at. They never buckle, th
